What is a Total Martial Artist?

Let’s start off with an attempt to define what we are talking about when we use the term ‘Total Martial Artist’, although at a glance the term appears to be self explanatory.
In this day and age of Mixed Martial Arts you could be forgiven for thinking everyone is a Total Martial Artist, but that’s not strictly true.
Although practitioners of Mixed Martial Arts tend to cover the main unarmed ranges of combat, from kicking, punching, trapping, clinching and grappling, it could be said that they do not cover the weapons ranges, both handheld and trajectory.
But that’s not really what I am getting at with the term Total Martial Artist, although it forms part of it to train in the different ranges of combat.
Thought also needs to be given to the nutrition and supplementation. Something which has been part of sports training for many years, but has only recently caught on with Martial Artists. We need to think of ourselves as ‘Martial Athletes’!
However, Martial Arts are more than just a sport. It is a way of life and so thought must also be given to the mental and spiritual aspects of training.
This way we can encompass body, mind and soul training in order to become Total Martial Artist.
